Declare State of Emergency in Education Sector, FG Urged

The Federal Government has been advised to urgently declare a state of emergency particularly in the Polytechnic Sub-Sector and the Education Sector in general, if Nigeria is to compete favourably with the developed world and the Asian tigers technologically.

Making the submission at a valedictory Media Chat held in Ado–Ekiti, the outgoing Rector of the Federal Polytechnic, Ado-Ekiti, Dr. Taiwo Akande, strongly advocated the unbundling of the Federal Ministry of Education and the creation of a separate Ministry of Technical/Polytechnic Education. This according to her would make government focus on a well-grounded policy on technical education citing other climes where such as Technical Education were given the best of attention and pride of place.

Dr. Akande emphasised with copious examples that the Polytechnic Sector holds the key to the country’s technological problems, because it matched theory with practicals and therefore needs to be encouraged and supported financially and morally.

The outgoing Rector who spoke passionately about Polytechnic education observed that why is it not possible to have robotics, made in Nigeria car and other inventions from the Polytechnic, this she said is not made possible as a result of lack of motivation, low funding and skewed policies against the Polytechnic sector.

“We must be serious with the Polytechnic education, if we must breakthrough technologically, since it has been proved that an average blackman is more innovative and brilliant than the white man” she said.

Mrs. Akande who spent her entire working life in the institution noted that her greatest achievements in the saddle as the Rector of the Institution were in the area of human capital development and Information, Communication and Technology (ICT) among others.

According to her, when she assumed office, there were only three Ph.D holders in the Institution but on leaving office, there are over 100 Ph.D. holders and that there were about 30 Chief Lecturer at the inception of her administration while she was leaving office with about 100 Chief Lecturers among other promotions and Staff development attained , in general.

The Polytechnic, she maintained; started the Computer Based Test (CBT) for her Students as far back as 2011 even before Jamb and other Institutions started it, adding that the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) had identified the Institution as leading in the areas of human capital development and entrepreneurship education.

She advised the incoming Rector to live above board, noting that challenges would come in diverse forms, but as long as his hands were not soiled, and he is perceived to be fair to all concerned, then he would achieve success, no matter what.

She however promised to put her experience at the disposal of the incoming Rector and the nation at large if and whenever called upon to serve in any capacity.
